When Salamanders burn forests to expand their land, it is not a victimless conquest. Plenty of forest inhabitants die in the flames, and the pain of their passing and the inherent magic in the flames can inhabit a vessel. It is not uncommon to find burning fallen trees shambling through the woods after salamanders have burned it. They are largely harmless to anybody but salamanders, who they attack without hesitation. Their wooden hides are tough and their jaws strong, but their internal flames quickly burn out and their ashes return to the earth, an ephemeral hate.
